Show Your Work

When I took high school geometry, our teacher was clear with us, we would not get full credit if we didn't show your work. As you may remember, when solving a proof in geometry, the process is just as important as the outcome.

Communication is no different. Many of the challenges I deal with in family businesses and family offices stem from one family member holding a point of view (the outcome) without articulating a clear why behind that point of view (the process).

A great example of this surfaced recently when a client walked me through - in exquisite detail - why he was frustrated with his family. He asked what he should do; I asked him if he had told his family what he had just told me. He had not. I encouraged him to show his work by explaining his thinking and frustrations to his family members so they could better understand why he was feeling what he was feeling.

While I don’t encourage you to verbalize absolutely everything that’s in your head, I would encourage you to start developing the skill of showing others your work; I guarantee it's a proof that will deepen all your relationships.
